From Rats to Avatar
Avatar has done very well in China. The film initially had lines overnight in Beijing. The management there almost doubled the price, to thirty U.S. dollar equivalent. The manager of the theater stated on television, with aplomb appropriate to an American banker explaining that really, bankers are very like sports stars and should be paid accordingly, that the Chinese theater wasn’t really price gouging, they were just bringing demand into line with supply. China, Nanning, and ASEAN
Briefly put, Nanning has simply exploded since I visited two years ago with new buildings, new roads, and new university programs and buildings. The central government has very sensibly used all of these development projects not only to much improve its ties to ASEAN, but to simultaneously spur local development in one of its poorer autonomous regions. Has the world order changed???
But I am quite certain that some very important things have changed, if only because the Chinese think that they have; but our American consciousness is very slow to change. I fear a real turmoil is inevitable as the rising nationalism of at least some Chinese collides once again with our complacent American beliefs that, by God—our God—we know what is best for Chinese youth, for Chinese minorities, and for the World Order.
