Learning from the Chinese riots in Cangnan

On April 20th, a highly respected Hong Kong paper, the South China Morning Post, reported that there had been major riots in Cangnan county in Zhejiang province, not far from the major city Wenzhou. The riot, it was said, was caused by local police officials who, it was rumored, had beaten a local man to death when he attempted to interfere with them. But the widely varying reports on the incident suggest that we do well not to jump too quickly to conclusions about events, particularly those found in relatively isolated areas in China, which are rapidly reported on the WWW.
